Bromelain is an enzyme extract derived from the stems of pineapples, although it exists in all parts of the fresh plant and fruit. This is because of the high levels of Vitamin C that is in this wonder fruit. Pineapples are also fat-free, cholesterol-free and low in sodium. Not surprisingly, they do contain sugar, with 16 grams per cup. For all its sweetness, one cup of pineapple chunks contains only 82 calories.
